Rabbit left in dumpster

The question the Lincoln County Humane Society is trying to figure out who would put a live pet rabbit inside a garbage dumpster and leave it there to die?

Investigator Todd Menard is handling the case after a rabbit was found around two o’clock on Tuesday afternoon. A good Samaritan heard the rabbit known as a “Flemish giant” rustling around inside the dumpster at 45 Manchester Avenue in St. Catharines. He was inside a box with some food and a pillow. The rabbit could have been killed by the cold weather or smothered by heavy bags. Wednesday afternoon investigators went door-to-door in the neighbourhood with posters asking people with information to give them a call.

Todd:  “All they have to do is call our shelter. It’s all confidential. If people are having problems with their animals, times are tough, they can call us and speak to us about what they’re options are. Putting an animal in a dumpster is not an option. They should be calling us and asking us what they can do with their animals. Again, this is the second time in two weeks this has happened and that’s two too many calls.”

Two weeks ago four kittens were found inside a donation bin at Lake and Lakeshore in St. Catharines. They were rescued after a passerby heard them meowing. The kittens will be put up for adoption on Friday at the Petsmart store on YMCA Drive.
