Quadriplegic killed in fire

A man in a wheelchair has died after a fire at an assisted living high-rise building in downtown Toronto.

Firefighters couldn’t reach him on the ninth floor in time to save him after the fire started around 9:30 last night. Neighbours say the man – a quadriplegic who lives alone – was a smoker.

Damage was confined to the one apartment unit.

More than 15 years ago, a 47 year old woman in a wheelchair died in a fire in the same building. The cause of that blaze was careless smoking.
