The Purge: Anarchy

The Purge: Anarchy is the sequel to 2013’s surprise indie hit The Purge, written and directed by James DeMonaco. While it wasn’t loved by critics, the first Purge film resonated with audiences thanks to an intriguing premise about one day each year where all crime is legal and emergency services are halted. The sequel looks to build on the first film, moving the story from a home invasion thriller to a city-wide chase. Working with an expanded cast and a no-doubt expanded budget, the film looks to be injecting some Hunger Game style elements as well. The film stars Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez, and Michael K. Williams.
The Purge grossed almost $90 million on a budget of just $3 million, so a sequel was pretty inevitable. James DeMonaco knew that he could return to this universe he created and look at the violent annual tradition in a different light. “We always said if we were lucky enough to do part two, we would want to show what’s happening on the streets in one of the biggest cities in America. We envisioned opening it up, because we felt the audience wanted to see more than what we gave them in the first film.”
The Purge: Anarchy is rated 14A.
