Psych patients should get own rooms: panel

Updated The panel investigating the beating death of a psychiatric patient at St Joseph’s mental health facility has come up with a list of 11 recommendations.

Michael Brewer (pictured), 30, was attacked on a soccer field at the West 5th site on May 23, 2012. Tyler Valcheff, 33, was sentenced to eight years in March after pleading guilty to manslaughter. The regional coroner will decide if an inquest will be called.

St Joseph’s president Dr David Higgins noted that the review did not find any risks to safety. However he did recommend improved security, as well as the provision that each patient in the new West 5th facility get their own room.
