Prime Minister Trudeau to visit Hamilton steel mill

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tour of steel and aluminum factories will include a stop in Hamilton.

Trudeau kicks off the tour today in Jonquiere, Quebec.

He will meet with bosses and union leaders at a Rio Tinto aluminum factory.

“Canada’s steel and aluminum industries provide thousands of Canadians with good, middle class jobs and play an important role in our economy,” Trudeau said in a statement.

“I look forward to hearing directly from workers about how we can work together to address these issues and help our steel and aluminum industries grow and succeed.”

Workers in both the aluminum and steel industries face uncertainty over new tariffs.

The U.S. will impose a 25 per cent tariff on imported steel and 10 per cent tariff on aluminum.

Canada and Mexico will be temporarily exempt but there is concern the measure could be reversed.

The prime minister will be in Hamilton on Tuesday.

He will also visit Sault Ste. Marie and Regina.

Canada is the United States’ largest provider of steel and aluminum.
