U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order attempting to dismantle the Department of Education.

This action has been long-foretold by Trump, who frequently pledged changes to the education system on the campaign trail.

While there remain questions around the legality of this move, employees and advocates have been quick to voice concerns.

The process of shutting down the Department of Education will require approval from Congress since only the legislature has the ability to close a cabinet-level organization.

If the legislation is introduced, 60 members of the 100-seat Senate will need to vote to shut it down.

In a bid to deliver on a campaign promise, U.S. President Donald Trump is getting the ball rolling on the closure of the Department of Education.

While entirely shutting the system down would require an act of Congress, the executive order signed by Trump is directing the Education Secretary to take steps to “greatly minimize the agency.”
