The 2015 Juno awards are now history bringing to an end a week-long celebration of the best and brightest in Canadian music. For the artists the awards are an opportunity to be honoured by their peers and for the communities lucky enough to host the show, it can be an economic windfall.
It is billed as the biggest awards show in the country, a week long event that can pump millions of dollars into the local economy and in Hamilton at least, it lived up to it’s promise. Venues were busy, restaurants were full and hotels were sold out. Taxpayers spent $250 000 bringing the Junos to Hamilton and with a return close to $11 million it’s hard to argue the economic benefits.
Even before the performers hit the stage Sunday night, city officials were already talking about bringing the show back to Hamilton, but they will have to wait awhile, next year the Junos will be held in Calgary.
