Police have arrested and charged a 63-year-old Port Colborne man following a “brief standoff” with officers on Friday.

Niagara police were called to the area of Neff Street near Elm Street around 5:33 p.m. for a reported disturbance.

They say early investigations determined that the suspect had been stealing items from a parked pickup truck when he fled the area.

The suspect then returned to the truck where he threatened the owner of the truck and another individual nearby before arming himself with a shovel and striking the owner with it.

Investigators say the man ran across the street and barricaded himself in the home of a relative where a resident of the house was assaulted.

While in the house, the man smashed a window and began throwing objects at the police on scene. He exited the house twice taunting officers while continuing to throw items at them.

The third time he left the home around 6:57 p.m., officers were able to successfully arrest the suspect with the use of a taser.
