Police warn of dangerous ‘ice shelves’

Hamilton’s Marine Unit is warning residents about a particularly icy phenomenon called ice shelves.
Ice shelves are formed by a combination of strong winds and bone chilling temperatures.
Hamilton police and the marine unit are warning people to enjoy them from afar as risks are both seen and unseen.
In some areas along Hamilton’s beach strip ice shelves stretch over 45 metres long and more than 4 metres high.
Police are warning parents to keep an eye out on their kids because it nearly impossible to know how deep an ice shelf is.
