Police investigate ‘swatting’ incident in Ancaster

Hamilton police are investigating a “swatting incident” in Ancaster.

Officers received a phone call to the central station front desk around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday.

The caller said they were in possession of “bombs” and eventually provided their location.

Police set up a command post at a nearby elementary school and began investigating.

They eventually made contact with one of the residents of the address the caller had provided.

The resident told police no phone call came from their household.

Officers went to the home and ensured the safety of all the residents.

Police now believe this was a “swatting” incident.

“Swatting” is described as a prank call to police where the caller makes a false report in order to send police and emergency response teams to another person’s address.

The Division 30 Criminal Investigations Branch has taken over the investigation.

Correction: A previous version of this story erroneously stated police were investigating a bomb threat at Rousseau Elementary School in Ancaster. Police were on scene at the elementary school but only to set up a command post.
