Police investigate after a gun call closes a mountain access

The Claremont Access to the Hamilton mountain was closed for much of the afternoon for a dramatic police investigation. Cars couldn’t get into the area and people weren’t allowed to get into their homes.

Police say they went into action when they received a report about a man on the street holding two guns. Police say the tip led them to put a nearby school, St. Patrick’s on hold and secure, as well as the nearby Ontario Works offices.

Backed up by canine and patrol officers, the armoured tactical unit vehicle moved up to the house in question. Before long, a man came out, his hands held high in surrender.

Police demanded that anyone else in the house come outside and when there was no response, they went in, heavily armed. A short time later returning to their vehicle, without any apparent suspects or evidence.

“We successfully brought two suspects, no weapons were found, we are sure the public is safe now.” Jerome Stewart, Hamilton Police.

Police say the men have been taken in for questioning, they have not been arrested at this point but the investigation is ongoing and charges could still be laid.

Even though traffic was snarled for much of the afternoon and police did not find any weapons, they say they are grateful for the tip and that the public should continue to say something if they see something.
