Road safety is the focus off the OPP and local police forces. They are increasing their presence on roads this Thanksgiving weekend, as they carry out Operation Impact.

Paradise Road, near Main Street in Westdale is just one of the numerous stops Hamilton police are stationed. They are out in full force this long holiday weekend and they are looking for “the big four”: impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving and people not wearing seat belts.

If you are on the roads this weekend, you will notice many more officers out patrolling.

Hamilton police, the OPP and other police services are all taking part in Operation Impact, which started yesterday and will run until Thanksgiving monday.

Officers see an increase in driving accidents during long weekends, so this Thanksgiving, just like every year in the past, they increase their presence on the roads to ensure better safety.

So far this year, 213 people have died on Ontario roads and police say 182 of those deaths can be attributed to the “big four” dangerous driving behaviours.

Officers are also increasing their presence on the waterways and trails because the warm weather is expected to bring more people outdoors.

Whether you’re on the roads or on the water, police are asking everyone to please stay alert.
