Police identify Hamilton man fatally shot near Jackson Square

Hamilton police have released the identity of a 19-year-old man who was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon near Jackson Square.
Officers say the incident happened shortly after 1 p.m. in the area of King Street West and MacNab Street South, just outside the Ellen Fairclough Building.
Sgt. Daryl Reid, a homicide detective with Hamilton police, says the victim was walking on a sidewalk when a male suspect got out of a vehicle and shot at the victim several times before fleeing westbound on King Street West.
“We can confirm that there is only one shooter but we cannot confirm at this point whether there were other people in the vehicle at the time,” Reid said during a press conference Thursday.
Emergency crews arrived to find a man suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed him to hospital, where he later died.

Police have now identified the victim of the targeted shooting as Alexander Circiumaru of Hamilton.
“There were numerous people that we could see on video walking through that area. The government buildings, mall nearby, there’s people coming through the crosswalks at all times of the day there. There were numerous people that could have been caught in the crossfire here,” Reid said.

Investigators say the male shooter was wearing black clothing and a face mask at the time of the incident. A new black Honda Civic with a spoiler on the trunk was involved.
Police say the vehicle was last seen driving westbound in the area of King Street West and Queen Street North.
Police could not comment on the relationship between the victim and suspect.
