Hamilton Police services met with members of the First Nations community today in celebration of the 10th annual gathering.

The gathering helps break down barriers between police and aboriginal people. It gives opportunities to create open dialogue while also partaking in a number of traditional activities.

Elder counselor Walter Cooke believes this is a very significant event. “I think it’s important because we have been working together for the last 10 years.”

“We have been working with the police force here in hamilton to educate them in terms of how to treat native people when they work with them and they’ve been listening quite well.”

Leaders in education and the community came to the event today, including mayor Bob Bratina. The gathering builds relationships and allows for a better understanding of each other’s culture.
