Police charge Fort Erie man with assault after double stabbing

A Fort Erie man is facing assault charges following a stabbing that left two people with serious injuries early Friday morning.
Niagara police responded shortly before 7 a.m. to a home on Marina Drive near Green Acres Drive, where they found a woman in her 20s and a man in his 30s with serious stab wounds.
Paramedics transported them to an out-of-region hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe the victims and suspect are known to each other.

Police also learned that the stabbing happened after an argument. The suspect fled the scene but was arrested nearly 10 minutes later on Kennedy Drive.
James Jonathan Smith, 25, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
Smith remains in custody pending a video bail hearing at a St. Catharines courthouse on Saturday.
