Police arrest wrong person in stabbing near Niagara Falls City Hall, new suspect charged

Niagara police say they arrested the wrong person in connection with a stabbing in Niagara Falls last week.
Officers say a 66-year-old Toronto man was stabbed multiple times while he was sitting on a park bench near Niagara Falls City Hall around 8:45 p.m. on March 27.
Paramedics brought him to an out-of-town trauma centre, where he underwent lifesaving surgery.
Police say the man has since been released from hospital and is recovering at home.

Detectives initially arrested 35-year-old Luizao Miguel Castro based on physical evidence they found at the scene and an outstanding warrant for an unrelated matter.
Further investigation determined that Castro was not responsible for the stabbing and as a result, all related charges were dropped.
Castro had attended a bail hearing on March 28 for their unrelated outstanding warrant at a St. Catharines courthouse.
Officers in Niagara worked with Toronto police to identify and arrest 23-year-old Mackenzie Duncan of Toronto on Sunday. They were charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and for failing to comply with a release order.
Duncan was held in custody and is scheduled to attend a bail hearing in Toronto on April 9.
