Poilievre fires back after Trump says he’d ‘prefer dealing with Liberals’

As Canadians wait for a federal election to be called, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has responded to some not-so-good comments made about him by U.S. President Donald Trump.

During a Fox News interview, Trump was asked about the possible upcoming Canadian election and the fact that polls now suggest the Liberals are in the lead.

Trump said it would be easier to deal with a Liberal, calling Poilievre “no friend of mine.”

“The Conservative that’s running is stupidly, no friend of mine, I don’t know him but he said negative things,” he said.

The U.S. president fired shots at Poilievre, saying although he doesn’t care about who wins the expected upcoming election, Liberal Leader and Prime Minister Mark Carney would be easier to deal with.

“It’s easier to deal, actually, with a Liberal and maybe they’re going to win, but I don’t really care – doesn’t matter to me at all.”

Poilievre was in Sudbury Wednesday and fired right back at Trump and the Liberals, saying he is right to think he would have an easier time dealing with a Liberal.

“It’s clear that President Trump wants the Liberals in power because they will keep this country weak,” Poilievre said.

The Progressive Conservative leader referred to former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s time in office, saying Canada’s economy is suffering because of him, and said Mark Carney was Trudeau’s financial adviser.

“That’s exactly the kind of weak, compromised, conflicted leadership that Donald Trump wants and it’s why he endorsed Mark Carney yesterday,” he said. “What Canadians need, though, is a leader who is tough, and firm, and stands by his convictions.”

As Canada continues to deal with Trump’s tariffs, Carney has said he wants to talk with Trump when it’s appropriate, saying Trump needs to stop making comments about the country becoming the 51st state before bilateral talks can start.

During the interview on Fox News, Trump was asked about why he has been hard on Canada with tariffs and threats.

Without a detailed explanation, he repeated his false claim that America is subsidizing Canada around $200 billion a year and said Canada “cheats.”

Meanwhile, Elon Musk, who is a member of Trump’s inner circle, appeared to show support for Poilievre on X earlier this year through several posts.

Musk has made no recent mention of the Conservative leader.
