21-storey condo planned for Hamilton mountain

A public hearing will be held to discuss a plan to build a 21-storey residential high-rise on Hamilton’s mountain.
The plan is calling to redevelop the site of 1600 Upper James Street into a 248-unit residential building with some commercial space on the ground floor.
The hearing will be held at the Barton Stone Mount Hope United Church, located at 21 Stone Church Road West, on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.
Currently, the location is home to a defunct used car sales lot.
The proposal is being pitched by property development firm LJM Developments. The same company is currently working on a 13-storey condo project next to the Bell Manor loop near Grays Road and Barton Street.
If approved, it will be one of the tallest condos on Hamilton’s mountain.
The proposed plan, dated Sept. 3, includes four levels of underground parking and estimates there to be room for 159 cars and 129 bicycles.
After 9 meters of roadside extension is finished on Rymal Road West, the building’s overall site area is estimated to be around 20,655 sq ft.
Surrounding the area are several retail shops, banks, and restaurants, awarding the location a high walk score of 80.
