Plan to twin the Garden City Skyway

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation is planning to twin the Garden City Skyway Bridge in St. Catharines.
The Ontario Government has previously said it plans to expand the Queen Elizabeth Way to eight lanes with high-occupancy vehicle lanes in the Niagara Region as the choice for the future of transit in Niagara.
A twin bridge over the Welland Canal will likely include truck climbing lanes. MTO plans to file an environmental assessment by the end of next year with design of the new bridge taking about four years.
A new bridge would likely be built in 2025, about the same time the existing bridge will need to be refurbished. Officials say twinning the Garden City Skyway is less expensive than building a tunnel under the canal.
