Pistorius sentenced to 5 years

A judge in South Africa has sentenced Oscar Pistorius to a maximum five-year sentence in the shooting death of his girlfriend
on Valentine’s Day last year.
But experts say the legal code cited by the judge provides for release after 10 months, with the rest of his sentence to be
served under house arrest. The double-amputee Olympic runner also got a three-year suspended
sentenced for firing a gun in a restaurant a few weeks before Reeva Steenkamp’s death.
In his sentencing this morning, the judge noted the double amputee’s “gross negligence” in firing multiple times through his bathroom door in the dark on Valentine’s Day last year.
Pistorius was found guilty last month of “culpable homicide,” a lesser offense than pre-meditated murder. The judge said the sentence proposed by the defence, 3 years house arrest with community service, was clearly inappropriate, but she also didn’t agree with the 10 years in jail requested by the prosecution.
