Pistorius: I didn’t mean to kill her
Paralympian tells bail hearing he shot girlfriend by mistake.
Oscar Pistorius says he believed Reeva Steenkamp was a robber.
In an affidavit read by his lawyer, the double amputee said that he felt vulnerable because he did not have on his prosthetic legs when he pumped bullets into the locked bathroom door.
Then he realized that Steenkamp was not in his bed.
He said “It filled me with horror and fear …”
He put on his legs, tried to kick down the door, then bashed it in with a cricket bat to find her shot inside.
He claims he ran downstairs with her, but “She died in my arms.”
Prosecution argues even if he thought she was a burglar, it’s still premeditated murder and wonders why a burglar would lock themselves in the washroom.
Judge rules Pistorius should be charged with premeditated murder, which will make it difficult for him to get bail.
Pistorius will remain in custody overnight.
The hearing will continue tomorrow.
