Pistorius gets bail

Video updated Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been granted bail while he awaits trial for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Chief magistrate Desmond Nair says he does not consider Pistorius a flight risk because South Africa is Pistorius’ permanent home. He has friends and family there, owns property there, is well known, and is willing to surrender passport and agree to the conditions of bail. He also said he doesn’t think Pistorius shows a propensity to commit violence.

Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder in the death of Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day. He says the shooting was accidental because he thought there was an intruder in his home.

Nair said there is enough evidence presented for him to proceed with the charge of premeditated murder.
