Phone scam arrests

Halton police have busted a multi-million dollar international phone fraud ring.

They say this scam was targeting elderly victims across North America.
Officers say there could be hundreds or possibly thousands of victims — most in the United States but also some here in Canada.
The alleged scammers created different scenarios and would tell the victims they were in trouble and needed money right away.
They made about 200 calls a day.
Police estimate that from 15 to 20 of those calls were successful, and that the scammers took in about three million dollars since November 2010.
Most of that money was wired offshore.
Police executed three search warrants this past weekend and arrested the group behind this scam.
Seven people were arrested. Those charged are from Oakville, Mississauga and Richmond Hill.
