People around the world take part in International Women’s Day

March 8 2024, marks the celebration of the 47th International Women’s Day, officially recognized by the United Nations in the women’s efforts to improve their rights as workers.

People around the world are taking the time today to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women.

The YWCA Hamilton held its 48th annual Women of Distinction Awards last night, recognizing the accomplishments of women in Hamilton and Halton. 

Medora Uppal, CEO of YWCA Hamilton, said “as we do this work we want to continue to recognize that we do not live in a society that is equal yet, that there are still many inequalities that face women and gender diverse people.”

Winners were recognized for their work in areas like climate change, healthcare and education. 

Sashaina Singh, Women of Distinction Award winner shared her thoughts about the event that was held on Friday, “I think it’s quite special to be celebrated, I don’t think we take enough time to stop and celebrate the women, girls and gender-diverse people in our communities.”

Friday afternoon, hundreds of women turned out for the second annual Women in Business Expo in Brantford.

The tradeshow focuses on women-owned businesses. The women’s expo features everything from book authors to people selling incense. 

Annette Hamm, CHCH’s Morning Live Anchor attended the expo, “it’s very interesting talking to all of the different women entrepreneurs and women business owners that are out here networking,” she said, “it’s so many facets of business and community, it’s great to get out and find out about these places.”

Sam Gernhart, the events organizer said, being at the event gives visitors the chance to network with each other, connect and meet new people.

In Hamilton, food from around the world was part of the International Women’s Day celebration at Limeridge Mall.

Events around the world drew women’s movement supporters to participate.

A Women’s Day march in Italy’s capital Rome attracted thousands, as they marched against patriarchal violence. 

In Germany, thousands gathered to magnify disparities such as equal pay.

A referendum in Ireland asked Irish votes whether constitutional references to the importance of a woman’s life within the home should be replaced. 

While in Lebanon, a protest called for support for Palestinians in Gaza.

In France, a stark contrast at a ceremony held after lawmakers voted to protect abortion rights in their constitution. 

Whether here in Canada or abroad, women are facing historic shifts, and International Women’s Day is bringing attention to changes.
