Emergency crews were called just after 11 p.m., Friday, by CP police when the woman was hit by the train just west of New Mountain Road.
Canadian Pacific police and Hamilton police reconstruction unit conducted an investigation after the woman was hit.
Police say the woman was alone and walking on the tracks.
“Our thoughts are with the family at this time,” said Jeremy Berry spokesperson for CP in an email statement. “Based on the results of the preliminary investigation, the train crew applied the train’s emergency brakes and sounded the horn but was unfortunately unable to avoid making contact.”
“It can take a train a mile or more to come to a complete stop,” he added. “CP police are working directly with local police to investigate the incident with a focus on how this person came to be on the tracks at that time.”
Next-of-kin has been notified however police have not released the woman’s name.
