Pedestrian struck and killed by cyclist in Niagara-on-the-Lake

A community in Niagara-on-the-Lake has been shocked by tragedy this weekend.

A well-known and well-liked member of the community and nearby Queenston was killed when she was struck by a man on a bicycle.

It was one of two pedestrian fatalities in the region over the weekend.

A friend of the woman who was killed was paying tribute to her today, at the spot where she was struck by the bicycle.

People are shaken by the loss to their community.

81-year-old Louise Leyland was killed when police say she was crossing this road in Queenston on Saturday afternoon and was struck by a 64-year-old man on a bicycle.

Friends describe Louise as a popular member of the community, a retired teacher who was involved in historical projects, one of them as a director of the Friends of Fort George in Niagara on the Lake.

Police are investigating the collision, But people in the area say some cyclists go fast coming down the hill.

Earlier Saturday another pedestrian was killed, at an intersection in St.Catharines.

Police say a 32-year-old man was crossing at Ontario Street and Linwell Road when he was struck by two vehicles.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and police are still investigating.
