Pawn Sacrifice is a dramatic biopic directed by Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai). The film stars Tobey Maguire as chess genius Bobby Fischer and co-stars Peter Sarsgaard, Liev Schrieber, Michael Stuhlbarg, Lily Rabe, and Robin Weigert. It’s taken a year to be released after premiering at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

In a gripping true story set during the height of the Cold War, American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer (Tobey Maguire) finds himself caught between two superpowers when he challenges the Soviet Empire, whose players have dominated the game for decades. Also starring Liev Schreiber and Peter Sarsgaard, Pawn Sacrifice chronicles Fischer’s terrifying struggles with genius and madness, and the rise and fall of a kid from Brooklyn who captured the imagination of the world.

Maguire also acted as a producer on the film and worked closely with Zwick to develop the picture. “Tobey was very involved with developing the material,” says Zwick. “He had very strong opinions and that made for a great collaboration. We banged heads in the best way possible. I have worked with some great actors and I know that these guys have so much to contribute. If you don’t listen, it’s at your own peril.”

Pawn Sacrifice is rated PG.
