Paul Bernardo applied for day parole

Just the mention of his name sends a chill down the spine of so many people in this region. Paul Bernardo is one of Canada’s most vicious and predatory criminals and now he’s applied for day parole. Bernardo has been declared a “dangerous offender” and sentenced to life in prison for raping more than a dozen women and torturing and killing teens Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French.

Kristen’s father Doug Fench is outraged that the system allows Paul Bernardo to apply for day parole. Doug and Donna French were notified last week that Bernardo, the man who tortured and killed their 15 year old daugher Kristen, was applying for day parole. Doug is angry that Bernardo even has the right. “When he killed Kristy and the other two, he gave up his rights. But our law says he has the right to apply.”

Bernardo was sentenced to life in 1995. His ex-wife, Karla Homolka, spent weeks on the stand recounting sickening details about how they both drugged and sexually assaulted Karlas sister Tammy, who died. How Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French were kidnapped, sexually assaulted and killed. Bernardo is the Scarborough rapist, who attacked more than a dozen women.

The public is angry and asking why one of Canada’s most vicious criminals and a dangerous offender is even allowed to apply for day parole.

Criminal lawyer, George Walker, struck a 12 year plea deal for Karla Homolka. He says Bernardo has a right to apply, and would have a heavy burden proving he’s no longer a danger to society. The victims have the right to challenge it. “Their concerns are going to be foremost in the minds of any member of the parole board sitting.”

“I don’t think he’ll ever get out. I hope not anyways” says Doug French.

The families are upset they have to go through this process, and there’s still no guarantee Bernardo will be locked up for life.
