The Past

The Past comes from acclaimed Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who tells the story of Ahmad (Ali Mosaffa), an Iranian man drawn back to Paris to finalize his divorce with his ex-wife Alice (Berenice Bejo). During his stay, he learns of the broken relationship between Alice and his step-daughter Lucie (Pauline Burlet), who disapproves of Alice’s new relationship with Samir (Tahar Rahim). Before he knows it, Ahmad finds himself enveloped in the family’s secret past.

The Past is Farhadi’s follow up to his Oscar winning film A Separation. It was during a visit to Paris to start work on a different film that Farhadi had the idea to write The Past. For French actress Berenice Bejo, this film was quite a change from her Oscar nominated role in  The Artist. She found the role challenging, saying it was “a delight for an actor to play a character so easily who is the complete opposite of themselves.” Her hard work paid off, netting her the Best Actress award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. The Past was Iran’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Oscars, and was nominated in the same category at the Golden Globes.
