Partial deconstruction begins at leaning north-end Hamilton home

Work has begun on taking down part of a leaning house in Hamilton’s north end.

Last week, the City of Hamilton said the new build on Ferrie Street would have to be partially demolished after it was discovered there was a chance the building could collapse and the neighbouring residents were forced to evacuate their homes.

City officials stepped in after the owners of the property weren’t able to comply with an Ontario building code order that was issued earlier this month.

The city decided that partial demolition would be the most economical approach to bring it down safely.

Crews could be seen dismantling part of the structures top floor Wednesday afternoon.

As of now, it’s unclear how much the demolition will cost, but that ultimately will fall back on the owner.

“Probably the biggest inconvenience is to the two that are adjacent neighbouring properties, the property remains fenced off, the road is closed right out in front of this house.” says Bob Nuttall, of the city.
