It’s not a teacher strike, but some children are missing class, because of a conflict with the Ontario government. A group opposed to the new sexual education curriculum has organized a parent strike, keeping their children at home for a week. According to the groups website, families are supposed to provide schools with a letter which says the new sex-ed curriculum contains information that is “age inappropriate and do not align with the principals and beliefs of our family.”
The number of students staying home in Hamilton is small, according to the Hamilton Wentworth District school board just 40 families are keeping the kids at home, and that is in a system of over 31 000 students.
The changes which will be introduced next fall include: lessons about same sex relationships in grade 3 and discussions about puberty in grade 4, a full year earlier than what is currently taught. Some of the other changes are that kids as young as grade 6 will be taught about gender experession, in grade 7 they will have lessons about the dangers of sexting.
The Premier has already met with parents who oppose the curriculum, and told them they’d have to agree to disagree.
