The Pan Am games are now just under one month away and it’s clear there will be some significant changes on our highways. Traffic is expected to get a lot heavier than normal so to try and manage it the Ministry of Transportation is temporarily changing the rules over who can use the HOV lanes on the QEW and 403. Starting June 29th, if you wish to use the HOV lanes, you will have to have 3 people in the car instead of the current 2 person minimum.

Constable Kevin Westhead patrols the Burlington area, he says if commuters think traffic is rough now, it’s about to get worse during the games. “Try to encourage people to leave a little sooner for work so they’re not feeling that rush and pressure to try to get to work on time.”

The fine for driving in the HOV lanes when you’re not supposed to is $110 and 3 demerit points.  The 3 person minimum rule will be in affect between June 29th and July 27th.
