The Pan Am torch relay started Saturday.

The flame arrived Saturday afternoon at Toronto’s waterfront despite the heavy rain and thunder.

Its 41 day journey across Canada has begun.

There was a delay because of a heavy downpour but that didn’t stop people from gathering along the waterfront to watch. Many cheering when the flame made it to shore.

It was carried in a float plane that touched down on Lake Ontario before being handed off and carried ashore in a canoe.

It arrived in Toronto from Mexico where the games were last held. Olympic Gold Medalist Rosie Maclennan was the first official torchbearer.

It will then be back in Toronto on July 5th and will conclude with the lighting of the cauldron at the opening ceremony on July 10th.
