Over 100 grams of fentanyl recovered in Welland traffic stop: police

A traffic stop conducted by police in Welland resulted in the recovery of more than 100 grams of fentanyl and one person being charged on Tuesday.

Officers on patrol in the area of King Street near Third Street when they observed a white 2018 Hyundai Elantra traveling on King Street.

A traffic stop was conducted, leading to the driver exiting the vehicle and “becoming argumentative” with the officer.

The driver did not provide any identification and went on to provide a name verbally. When the given name did not match a search in the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) database, he was placed under arrest.

A search of the vehicle led to police recovering over 100 grams of suspected fentanyl and photo identification belonging to the driver that confirmed the name provided was in fact false.

The estimated street value of the drugs seized is $20,000.

Jama Nasir, 35, of Etobicoke has been arrested and charged with possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking, disobeying orders of the court and obstructing a peace officer.

Nasir remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
