“Ontario Patient Transfer” has filed for bankruptcy.

For the past 19 years, the Hamilton-based company provided non-urgent medical transportation for patients across Ontario. The bankruptcy filing affects 200 workers. Court documents show Ontario Patient Transfer owes $4.7 million, but has assets of less than $900,000. The medical transport industry is not regulated and OPT lost a contract in the Hamilton area about a year ago.

Rick Van Kleef, the President of Ontario Patient Transfer said…

“We lost a contract and had to file a protection about a year ago and the debt load was a little too much we had to file for bankruptcy Thursday and it allows us eight weeks to figure out what we’ll be doing moving forward.”

Workers were given their final pay Thursday. However, most have been offered temporary jobs because the company plans to fulfill existing contracts to transport patients.
