OPP searches for ‘key piece of information’ in cold case murder of nurse

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has received more than 1500 tips regarding the 2010 murder of an Ontario nurse but investigators believe someone has a key piece of information that could lead to the killer.
Orangeville resident Sonia Varaschin was first reported missing on Aug. 30, 2010, after she didn’t show up for work.
Later that day, Varaschin’s white Toyota Corolla was found abandoned with blood stains on the interior behind a business on Broadway in downtown Orangeville.
Her remains were discovered less than a week later in a wooded area just off Beechgrove Side Rd. in Caledon.
Police believe the pediatric nurse was murdered inside her home.
The murder investigation remains active under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.
A $50,000 reward, authorized by the Province of Ontario, for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in Varachin’s murder remains in place.
OPP has received hundreds of tips from the public regarding the 42-year-old woman’s death but police are making another plea to residents to come forward with information.
“Investigators continue to seek the one piece of information that will lead to an arrest,” said OPP in a news release Monday. “Anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.”
