“Five Seconds Can Save Your Life on the Road”, that’s the message OPP are hoping gets through to motorists and passengers as they launch their Fall Seatbelt Campaign.
The OPP says 347 people have been killed in the last five years while not wearing seatbelts in collisions. OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair says “every year our officers tend to crash victims of all ages who are not buckled in at the time of the collision. More often than not, they die as a result of being ejected, partially ejected or from the physical trauma they sustained inside the vehicle.”
Drivers are also responsible for ensuring all passengers under the age of 16 are wearing seatbelts or properly restrained in car seats.
OPP say so far this year, 40 people have lost their lives in collisions where they were not wearing their seatbelts.
Not buckling up also comes with a hefty fine ranging from $200-$1000 plus two demerit points.
The fall seatbelt campaign runs until October 7th.
