OPP gets the message across to drivers

A lot of people are heading home right now as the last long weekend of the summer comes to a close. And police had more officers on the road this year to help crack down on distracted drivers.
Traffic in both directions is moving very well. There’s a lot of cars out there on the road but not a lot of slowdowns. And that seems to be the consensus of what people are telling me here at the gateway to Niagara. They’re telling me they haven’t seen a lot of accidents. People are trying to drive very carefully so perhaps people are getting the message from the OPP. The OPP do have a safety blitz going on right now looking for distracted drivers. Here’s what people had to say.
“Ok, great actually. When we were going there was a little bit of traffic. But then coming back it was perfect. (OPP officers out on the roads?) A few. They were looking for speeders.”
“The traffic going to the football game was good. It was steady with no real crazy people out on the road. And on the way back it was really light. I’m really surprised. I only saw one OPP. But nobody was going crazy.”
“We’re going to go to the lake and so far it’s going pretty good. We didn’t see too many coming back. But going up, we did see a number of police vehicles going up, Yes.”
“Traffic was really great. I was travelling from Toronto on the 401 to Niagara Falls.”
And the OPP say they are still out right now looking for distracted drivers. So far, no traffic fatalities on OPP patrolled highways. If you are caught texting and driving, it’s a $280 ticket.
