The OPP say this past Labour day weekend was the deadliest they’ve seen in 20 years.

There were 14 deaths in OPP-patrolled areas over the weekend, which included 12 on roads, one on the water and one involving an off-road vehicle.

OPP also cracked down on distracted driving this long weekend, laying a total of 800 charges across the province, 269 of which were here in the GTHA.

The charges come after several warnings from police leading up to the distracted driving campaign, alerting motorists to its dangers and its consequences. A distracted driving charge in Ontario carries a fine of up to $500 plus three demerit points.

Despite the warnings, police say the message is still not getting through to people. The recent charges over the weekend bring the total number of distracted driving charges this year to just under 9,000.
