He’s only been on the job for two days, yet 19-year-old Sam Oosterhoff has been the talk of Queen’s Park. He dodged questions before his swearing-in yesterday, and people in his riding say the youngest-ever MPP has a steep learning curve ahead of him.

It’s been a rocky start for the young MPP. During a vote today Sam Oosterhoff was spotted in the legislature appearing to be caught a little off guard.

Yesterday the social conservative was sworn in as the youngest-ever member of Ontario’s legislature. He could have been sworn in on Monday, but he says he delayed it so family members could attend.

He denied he deliberately scheduled it to avoid a vote on the equal parentage bill. His personal beliefs were also questioned.

Oosterhoff won the Niagara West-Glanbrook riding- Tim Hudak’s old seat – in last month’s by-election.

People there say Oosterhoff just needs time.

‘He is going to get picked on because he is the new guy and also because he is young and inexperienced, so he will have his challenges.”

“You got to give him the chance to prove himself.”

“A young fella – they are going to jump on him of course. He is going to have some challenges and i think for a young guy he will do real well.”

The first year Brock University student kept to his campaign promises on his first day -advocating for healthcare in the riding.

Things are only going to get busier for Oosterhoff, who says he will continue his studies on a part-time basis come January.
