Sergeant Margaret Eve, the mother of two was killed in June, 2000 after a tractor trailer crashed into her OPP cruiser.
She was pulled over on the side of a highway to interview some people in another vehicle at the time.
Deaths like Eve’s prompted Ontario’s 2003 move over law. It requires drivers to slow down when approaching emergency vehicles pulled over on the side of a highway.
Constable Dave Sparrock’s cruiser was hit from behind by a tractor trailer while he had a truck pulled over on on the 407 in 2012, he suffered serious neck, back and head injuries and is still in pain every day.
