The Ontario government is committing nearly $7 million to help create new supportive housing units in Hamilton.

The investment includes $4.8 million that will go toward the Good Shepherd housing initiative at 35 Arkledun Ave., where a former commercial school is being converted into housing units for at-risk women and non-binary individuals.

The five-storey building will have 49 permanent housing units and 24 units for short-term accommodations.

The remaining $2 million will help turn the former CD sports bar on Ottawa St. North into 12 units, and young indigenous parents will be prioritized for this space.

The new building will allow young parents to start their families in a safe environment that reflects the values of First Nations communities.

The $6.8 million investment is being provided through the Social Services Relief Fund.

Housing Minister Steve Clark is expected to make the announcement at 11 a.m. today.
