Ontario students taking 5 years to finish high school
Premier Dalton McGuinty touted the Liberal education report card during a pre-campaign stop Tuesday in Toronto.
More Ontario high school students are graduating — but it’s taking them an extra year to do so.
McGuinty says there’s nothing wrong with students taking five years to complete high school, saying the extra year shows commitment.
“Some kids can do it in 4 years, some choose to do it in 5 years, some can only do it in 5 years. It doesn’t matter to me as a parent, as a teacher, as a premier, I just want you to get it done.”
Opposition leader Tim Hudak says the only reason graduation rates are up is because the Liberals have “lowered the bar” by eliminating standardized tests, and reducing the number of report cards sent home to parents.
