Ontario MPP takes aim at handguns by targeting drivers

A Toronto-area MPP is hoping to crack down on people carrying illegal guns in their vehicles.
Mike Colle is proposing re-introducing his private members’ bill that would allow police officers to suspend a person’s driver’s license, and have their vehicle impounded for a week if they’re caught with an illegal handgun in their car.
Colle calls it a serious issue. “Petty criminals and gangsters who do this essentially know they can flout the law.”
“They can beat it by some kind of loophole and they are doing it continually.”
Drivers caught with an illegal gun could face a fine of up to $10,000, and up to 6 months in prison. Colle first tabled the bill in May, but it was scrapped when Kathleen Wynne called a spring election.
