MPP for Guelph and Ontario Green Leader Mike Schreiner announced his government would tackle housing and mental health crisis by building 60,000 permanent supportive homes over the next ten years, if elected.

The Greens say the supportive homes would have wrap-around mental health, addiction and other services.

Estimates from the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) says 25 to 50 per cent of homeless people live with a mental health condition.

“Everyone deserves an affordable place to call home and access to the support they need,” Schreiner said, in a statement. “We all benefit when our neighbours are housed.”

Schreiner also called on Ontario premier Doug Ford to “get serious” on housing and include supportive housing in the upcoming provincial budget.
