Ontario giving $2 million to help those affected by Beirut explosion

The Ontario government is giving $2 million to the Canadian Red Cross to help those affected by the explosion in Beirut.
“My heart breaks for the victims and the families affected by this terrible tragedy in Beirut,” said Premier Doug Ford.
“Along with Ontario’s Lebanese community, we stand with the people of Lebanon in this time of grief.”
More than 200 people were killed and thousands of others were injured because of the massive explosion one week ago.
Authorities expect the numbers to rise as search and rescue teams continue their work.
Red Cross teams are currently on the ground providing emergency medical assistance, food, water and shelter.
The blast was caused by the ignition of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate that had been sitting at Beirut port for more than six years.
In the wake of the disaster, documents have come to light that show that top Lebanese
officials knew about the existence of the stockpile.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has pledged $30 million in aid.
