Ontario’s new proof of vaccination certificate system goes into effect Wednesday.
Residents are now required to show they have received two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine to access non-essential businesses including dine-in restaurants, nightclubs, gyms, and sports facilities.
Those with medical notes from a doctor may be exempt from the new rules. The province says children under age 12 and youth under age 18 participating in indoor organized sports are also exempt.
Businesses that don’t check patron’s vaccination status and anyone who gives false information may be fined.
Residents can print or download their vaccination receipts from the provincial booking portal.
The province says altering the appearance of the receipt could render it invalid.
The Ministry of Health is working on additional supports and services to assist residents who need help obtaining proof of vaccination, including requesting a copy be sent by mail.
Anyone who needs support getting a copy of their receipt including those who do not have access to a computer or printer can call the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1-833-943-3900.
Individuals must also show ID so that the business or organization can ensure the vaccination receipt belongs to the person.
The provincial government says an app is being developed that will combine both identification and a proof-of-vaccination certificate.
Mandatory proof-of-vaccination certificates have been a contentious issue in the province.
Premier Doug Ford said he understands that some people are worried that their rights are being infringed upon. But Ford says the greater concern is seeing a sudden rise in COVID-19 cases and having to lock down the province again.
