Volkswagen plans to build an electric vehicle battery plant in St. Thomas and start producing batteries in 2027. This will be the European automaker’s first overseas gigafactory for battery cell manufacturing. The federal and provincial governments are working to attract investment in the sector. So far, they’ve landed at least ten major electric vehicle-related commitments totaling more than $16B.
