One dead, 5 in hospital after 2-vehicle crash in Welland

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say one person has died and five others were taken to hospital following a two-vehicle collision in Welland on Wednesday afternoon.
First responders say the head-on crash happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Highway 140 near Netherby Rd.
Paramedics say one person died at the scene. One person was taken to an out-of-town hospital via air ambulance. A land ambulance brought two more people to an out-of-town hospital and two others were taken to a local hospital.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says an SUV involved in the crash was later consumed by fire.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is now investigating.
