Ombudsman considers probe into Hamilton’s sewage leak

The Ontario Ombudsman is considering an investigation into the alleged cover-up of a sewage leak in Hamilton.

In November, the city confirmed one of its sewage overflow tanks had leaked 24 billion litres of sewage and storm runoff into the Chedoke Creek, which flows into Cootes Paradise, over four years.

This information was not released to the public for almost a year.

In his annual report, Ombudsman Paul Dube says 61 complaints about the incident were made to his office.

Most were related to the decision not to tell the public.

Others were concerned about the long-term environmental impact.

Dube says the office has made inquiries with the city and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.

The Ombudsman says once the Ministry has completed its investigation into the spill, he will determine whether an investigation is warranted.
